I'm currently making kickpanel enclosures out of fiberglass, to hold 5 1/4 components. I'm going to write a little article and put some pics on a webpage when I finish, I'll post up a link when it's done.

Hey,

I'm just about to cut holes in my center console for 6 1/2 in speakers. I've measured that with the 5 1/2 in cutout that if I stagger them (left side aft, right side forward) there is plenty of clearance. Most of us wouldn't be willing to cut up that expensive piece of console, but I'm planning on rebuilding and recovering it down the road. Just want to get some good sounds into the car for now.

I'm also working on a design for speaker panels that will fit behind the seats. These panels will be made of wood enclosures with a black screen for sound vent. They will be covered with black vinyl to match the interior. Preliminary measurements indicate I can fit a 6x9in tipped at an angle, and only use approx 4 1/2 in behind the seat. I'm short (5'4"), so I always have seat forward - might as well put that space to use.

When the design is done I'll post it on my sight along with pics of the center console.

If you want a stereo, don't put the speakers in the center console because you'll just end up with mono. and bad sounding mono at that. For proper staging, you want the speakers to the outsides, and as far foward as possible to minimize the pathlength differences from the speakers to the ears. This is most important with midrange drivers and tweeters, and midbasses to some extent. With subs, it doesn't matter because true bass is omnidirectional. The only way to achieve the best possible staging is with custom kick panel enclosures, usually made from fiberglass, to hold your mids and tweets. Speakers behind the seats other than subs are a similarly bad idea in trying to achive optimal sound, as it will most likely ruin any good staging you might have up front. A properly designed system should not need any rear "fill". Feel free to email me with any questions you might have!
