Battery Acid Spill

So my voltage regulator went out and the battery in my race car boiled over during a track session. The battery is located in the trunk and to make a long story short acid was sloshing around the trunk area for 25 minutes. I immediately filled the trunk with baking soda to neutralize the acid and then cleaned it up when I got home. Since then I cleaned out the trunk, brought it down to bare metal and resprayed it. Now my issue is some surface rust under the car.

The trunk has various drill holes from years of being a race car. Acid must have dripped through some of these holes and I can see some corrosion on the axles, headers, megaphones , shifter linkage and other areas. Any recommendations on cleanup? I plan to sand everything down and respray when I get time within the next month but I am wondering if I should take any steps now to neutralize and remaining acid?

I'm pretty frustated at this point. While the car has never been pristine, the undercarriage was in respectable condition for a 30 year racecar. ..

Sorry to hear about that. I would grab a spray can of that acid-neutralizing foam you get at the local parts house. The stuff I have is a yellow foam that turns pink when it hits acid. It's a pretty quick way to find any traces of acid. And you'll be amazed what it turns up. Spray it, wash it off with water, repeat until you've killed all the acid. Then you'll know it's just a matter of prep/paint or whatever without the complication/concern of residual acid.

thanks for the tip. I was always a little hesitant cleaning things up and just assuming the acid was gone. This way I'll have peace of mind I've eliminated it.

The battery is relocated to the trunk so no need to clean the hell hole

Oops, missed that relocation bit. Cover the stuff under it with plastic, or even better pull that stuff out, clean it up and paint it, or you will be buying axles and a header sooner than you might like, bet you got some on the transmission case too, probably got on pretty much every thing under there.

I went and bought an optima after seeing my dad's 911 do that
