SIX Conversions - Any with AC?

I'm looking to do a 3.0 six, but need to maintain the AC from the four. Likely I'll need a different compressor and mounting scheme, but anyone BTDT?

TIA,

Unfortunately I already have the cut-up front trunk. My main concerns are in the engine bay and how the AC mounts, where, etc.

Better off selling the six conversion and getting a used Boxster with A/C or if financially able get a Cayman with A/C.

Clay Perrine (shows up here sometimes, also frequents the 914club BBS) has done the Six->AC route. It was also done in the past by Gord Luy from up North ("cdn914 on several BBSes) and some details were posted on the old "Renegade 914 Club" website. The site is gone now, but some of the WWW archive sites have copies of it. Right now www.webarchive.org is not coming up for me, but if you can get it to wake up, search for http://dgi.net/914 , then click on featured 914s, cool 914-6 or something like that.

EDIT: Oops, it helps when you type the address correctly...

The second, more specific, one I posted just worked fine for me.

If you are interested, this has been on my /6 for about a year now, and it works great. I had a small problem with pulley alignment on the top idler, but it's fixed now. That's how I found out I can change the belt in 5 minutes on the side of the road in a business suit without getting anything but my hands dirty.

Try that with the shims on a standard 914/6 fan.....

When I make Mark II of this setup, I will use aluminum for the compressor mount and raise the compressor up slightly. I also want to use an automatic tensioner in place of the bottom idler pulley.

Clay,

Do you have a parts list for the belt & pulleys - especially the one on the fan?

TIA,

The crank and fan pulley came from Clewett Engineering. They sell a serpentine belt kit for a 911, but it won't work on a 914 /6 because it mounts to the engine support cross bar mounting location. I used their pulleys. The idlers are from IceAC, and are used in their 914/4 belt kit (it only uses one).

The tensioner is a timing belt tensioner for a Nissan 300ZX (VG30 engine).

If you are going to build one, you need to raise the compressor up on the mount about an inch. The way it is right now it hits the sheet metal under the battery tray and causes a vibration. I fixed mine by trimming off the mounting ear on the bottom of the compressor.

And you have to drill a hole over the #1 spark plug location or it will push down on the plug end and short it out.

Clay,

Thanks a million. It may be a few months before I get to this stage, but this will help greatly.

a/c for 914-6

Clay,
i built this 914-6 for my daughter now 17 and all she does is complain of not having an a/c....when i was 17 i was lucky to have 4 matching tires.

but i do understand she is a girl and doesn't want to smell like a porsche engine all the time. have you made any changes/modifications to how you designed this? approx budget? and found better suppliers since you last did this project. I will be doing this for her and need to know more
thanks

Clay nice setup but back to the original question can the stock 911 AC bracket/location be used when intalled into a 914? I need to know this as I am doing a /6 conversion and want AC also and I need to know if I purchase a stock 911 AC bracket will it fit in the 914?

rfuerst,

If I recall correctly, it will only fit with modification to the forward bulkhead of engine bay. Not cutting, but pounding to produce the needed dimple.

Enjoy!

I have not made any changes yet. The pictures dont' show it, but after putting it in the car I had to add a hole above the #1 spark plug wire. If you don't, it pushes down on the wire enough to break it.

I have a second generation bracket fabricated, but I didn't have another motor when I made it, so it is too tall. I was going to eliminate the metal between the mounts on the compressor, and make a one piece front bracket. I was also going to make a different way to mount the idlers, and incorporate an automatic tensioner in with the lower idler.

As for the 911 compressor mount, no, it won't work on a 914. The 914/6 fan sits in the dimple between the seats. You have to dimple the firewall behind the driver's seat about 4 inches to clear the compressor clutch and belt! If you do that, I hope you aren't tall because you end up severely limiting the rearward driver's seat travel. Porsche actually put AC on a 916 that was sent to Peter Gregg (AA has it now) and they actually cut out the firewall and left just a thin strip of leather over the compressor clutch.

That's the reason I made the compressor mount the way I did. It is on the same side as the /4 dealer installed AC, so you can use the hoses from a /4 system.
