914 with 911 front end- Which strut inserts?

Have a question that I have not seen posted yet....

914 with a 1988 Carerra front end (Boge struts, bigger brakes and control arms with underbody sway bar. Popular upgrade for a 5 lug.

Question:
What inserts would be the correct pick for the front? 911 or 914? I am going with Koni adjutables and all the manufacturers Bilstein, Koni, Boge have different part numbers for the inserts for the 911 and 914 because of different valving.

Anything else I should be aware of? Any problem using the new replacement 914 inserts in the Carerra/ Boge strut tubes? Are the tube dimensions the same. All I can see visually that is different is the crown nut securing the insert. Should I just order the 914 strut inserts for Boge tubes and go?

If you are useing 911 strut housings I would think to be safe you would use 911 inserts. I am converting my 914 over to 911 struts/housings and I never gave it a thought to use 914 inserts. It might be possible but why risk it?

Wayne- please pickup the white phone!

I guess my question basically asks are the inserts dimensionally the same?
If they are then not a problem. If they are then need to change the game plan.

911 inserts have a different valving than the 914. The rebound is different. This may not be a problem as the 914 front end weight is lighter than that of a 911. This could even be an improvement. If the valving difference is not enough to worry about than will order what fits the tubes.

I do know the insert retaining nuts (Crown nuts) are different on the outside.

I am going to call Koni and Bilstein on this one.

Wayne! Any input on this one?

From Dave at TRE Motorsports.

Use the correct year inserts for the year/ model tubes.
911 inserts in 911 tubes! Any valving differences is minimal -if noticeable.

That was easy......
