I'm trying to install a VDO oil pressure gauge and I'm having a problem. When I wire it per the diagram and turn on the power, the needle jumps all the way over to the right and is pegged at the max psi. This is happening before I have wired the sender to the gauge. Do I have a short in the gauge or when I complete wiring the sender, will this correct itself?

It should correct itself. The way I understand it, the gauge measures resistance of voltage fed to the sensor.

If you have every thing wired in except the signal from the sender that could be normal. Just plug in the sender and find out

OK, I hooked up the sender and turned the key on. Instead of the needle jumping over to 80 psi, it now moves slowly over and pegs at 80 at idle speed and doesn't move. What now?

I would recommend hooking up a mechanical gauge to see what the pressure really is. On my race car with a two stage external pump, on startup and cold the oil pressure is > 80PSI at idle but at 210 degrees it is 15PSI at idle but still pegs the gauge at over 3000 RPM.
