1.7 to 2.0
Hi, New to 914. Just purchased a 1.7 with a very good body, really wanted a 2.0 but couldn't find one.
Question, can a 1.7 be upgraded to 2.0, is it just a matter of buying bigger jugs and heads or is the crank and case different? What is the big bore kit i read about? Or, if someone has a 2.0 that needs rebuilding for sale let me know Thanks

You would just need larger pistons and a 2.0 crank. you would also need some headwork.
However, it wouldn't be worth it for the cost. Build something with some actual power.

Fair enough, should i dump the 1.7 and start with a 2.0 and build that out?

No, your case is fine. Start with that. Take a look at www.aircooledtechnology.com
He sells engine kits. I'm saving up for a 2270 kit. The kits have everything - new heads, new pistons and cylinders, and countless other parts. Plus you get their support.

The "big bore kit" is a set of 96mm pistons and cylinders, which enlarge the 1.7 motor into a 1911cc. The problem is that, in order to fit into the recesses ("registers") in the 1.7 heads, the cylinders are quite thin, which is not exactly good for durability.
The registers in the 1.8 and 2.0 heads are larger, so putting 96es into one of those doesn't compromise longevity. When people really want to build a 1911 out of a 1.7, I suggest that they get the kit for the 1.8, and fly-cut the heads to fit the cylinders. The 2.0 has longer stroke and better heads than the 1.7 or 1.8 (and much better heads than the Bus 2.0, for that matter!). It is generally a better basis for a large motor, except for the fact that the 2.0 heads crack relatively easily, and that can require quite a bit of $$ to properly repair. --DD
