74 914 1.8 Electrical Gremlins, Help Needed

Question 1. The fuel pump will not operate with the key on. I removed the seat belt relay under the passenger seat and jumped the two yellow wires together as required if the seat relay is defective, which it is. I can get the pump to run if I run 12V directly to the pump from the battery. Where do I start to fix this problem correctly.

Question 2. I just installed new points, condenser when I turned the engine over with the key I noticed the green wire from the coil to the points was getting hot and melting the insulation off of itself. Before I installed the points and condenser I observed the black wire from the coil also has had its insulation melted. I realize this is probably from a bad ground, but where. How do I prevent this from continuing to happen.

This car has been sitting (neglected) for ten years in a garage.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Did you check the fuel pump relay, and do a physical inspection of the wiring between the different components?

Fuel pump: The 1.8 does not run the pump when the key goes from "off" to "on", like the 1.7 and 2.0 do. It should run the pump when the starter is cranking (that yellow wire is "hot"), and also when the flap in the air flow meter has moved off of "closed". So turn the key on, push the vane in the AFM, and see if the pump runs.

Burning coil wire: I know I've read of several people having this problem, but I don't recall exactly what the cause was. I think in some cases people had the relay board connectors plugged in off by one pin. That shouldn't be possible due to the way they are keyed, but it is. There may also be some problem with the coil, or the wire from the points to the condensor may be shorting somewhere.

Vapors, did your fuel pump start working?

Mine is acting screwy, it works intermittently, and I was hoping to learn something from your thread.
