When this happened to us over the years, I started at the tach and went back towards the engine. If you were futzing around in the engine compt. recently then reverse the steps as the issue is probably back there.

- pry the tach out CAREFULLY and check the black wire with purple stripe and it's spade lug to see if it has broken. You can clean the lug on the tach with a small piece of sand paper and try the tach. If you have a test meter with tach/dwell then connect the test tach and see if it works and if it does, then the tach may be bad. Check all the other connectors on the back also?

- If that did not help, try checking the tach wire resistance to ground, it should be an open reading.

- If that did not help, pull the relay board cover and check the pin on the connector that sends the signal to the tach wire to make sure it has not deteriorated so that it has failed. To find the connection number, see the electrical diagrams on the site here.

- Check the pin on the other connector that takes the tach signal from the coil and also the connector on the coil to see if they are deteriorated and not shorted.

If this does not help, probably the tach has failed and needs replacement.

If anything else has also failed (alt light on, for instance, or other gauges not working) check your fuses.
