I've ordered the same " 1975 1.8L Porsche 914/4" distributor through Checker twice now.
First time I got a 205A in the box with an egged-out ( bent) case, this time I got some no- vacuum advance "009" something or other ( in the same Cardone stock # box!) I think these folks think " just put one of those little Bosch 4-banger things in there" regardless of the spec you need. BUMMER! I really wanted a 205AA to replace my crappy 009 thing on my 73 2.0 with Webers...maybe if I give them 15 or 20 tries I'll get the "luck of the draw" here. Kind of sucks, though...don't you think? |

call me uneducated, but what is it about the 009 that is so undesirable? I have one...should I get rid of it?

As I posted on a different BBS, "The only use a Type IV [914 engine] guy has for a 009 distributor is to trade it to a Type I [Bug engine] guy for something he can actually use."
The advance curve in the 009 is not matched very well at all to the Type IV engine. The quality of a good number of them is also somewhat suspect. If you must go centrifugal-only, the 050 distributor is a better choice. But the stock 1.8's distributor is generally a better choice for any 914 motor that can use it. (I.e., one that isn't running D-jet EFI with the extra "trigger points" down on the bottom.) --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Well, here are your choices:
- Get a 050. No vac unit, but works a lot better than an 009 - Get a new 205AA from PP or other source. Incredibly expensive. Not worth it, IMO. - Get a used 205AA and have John Larson (dig up his address off of Rennlist) rebuild it for you. Will probably cost you a total of $200 to $250, and you'll have a really nice dizzy. - Keep returning the A1 Cardone rebuilds until you get the one you want. Personally, that's what I'd do. They're very inexpensive compared to the alternatives, and lifetime warranteed. Sure it's a PITA, but it's the cheap way to go. Brad Anders |

What does Carbs have to do with choosing a dizzy? I think the reason there is a 009 in the car is because a conversion to carbs was made, and that was what was reccomended.

It was either recommended by someone who (coincidentally) had 009 distributors for sale, or by someone who didn't know any better.
The stock distributor (of any kind) is a better match for the 914 engine than the 009, no matter what kind of fuel system. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

If I remember right, didn't the 009 distributor slightly vary the firing timing for cylinder 3 (because #3 would run hot due to location of Type 1 oil cooler)?
