I'm looking for details about the #40 914/6 that won the 1970 Le Mans GT & 2.0L classes.
I'm considering what it would take to replicate the car. Has anyone seen the original? Any suggestions on sources of information (other than the Le Mans movie with Steve McQueen - cool racing action)? Many thanks, Gerard |

Ahhhhh....one of my favorites of all time. That car is absolutely magnificent! It was on display at the Dunkels show & swap meet this January. I chatted briefly with the owner (the guy in the green shirt leaning on the car) but unfortunately I've forgotten his name. Dave Darling has more info I believe. Here are some pics of this historic machine:

That's one of the cars I'm modeling mine after too. I also have a Detail Cars 1/43 model on my computer here at work. That is a nice car.
Question: I am buying the BMW 2002 licence plate lights for the doors and rear deck lid. Does anyone have any ideas on how to run the wires? I will be using a dedicated toggle switch on the dash. ------------------ Dave 1970 914/6 1995 Golf GTI-VR6 1996 Passat TDI |

Gerard, 911 and Porsche World dedicated an
article to that car in their October, 2000 issue. The current owner is a guy named Mike Hagen, who, I believe, is a cop in Los Angeles. You can also find more information about it in Brian Long's book. Good luck with the project. |

The owner's name is Mike Hagen. He gave me an e-mail address at the swap, but it bounced.
Jon Lowe's website has dozens of pics of the car. Glenn Stazak's 914-6 GT page has general GT info, but not nearly as many specific pictures as Jon's site. Glenn's: http://www.stazak.com/914/gt Most books about 914s have at least some info on the GTs. The only network that broadcasts races with 914s in them would be Speedvision. And that, darned infrequently. They are airing a POC Tribute to LeMans race this month, and they aired the 98 Monterey Historics (so did Fox Sports Net, actually), but those are the only 914 races I've ever even heard about being on TV. Unless you count Steve McQueen's movie "LeMans", which has that very car (#40) in it. Both in footage from the actual 1970 race, and in footage shot over the next couple of months. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Wow!!! What a great response. It's even more exciting to know the original car is such great condition, and alive and running!
They say imitation is the greatest form of flatery. In my book, any car that finished 6th overall out of 55 is worth flattering. Thank you very much. I'll keep you posted on what all I can find. It will be a featured item on my Pelican parts WEB page. Gerard '74 914 2.0L Sweet Ravenna 3D914 |

OK, I'm back. After reviewing the info from these sights and a couple of other books, I've concluded at this point that this is not going to be any small task. Brain Long in his book "Porsche 914 914/6" says in his introduction to the 914/6 GT that - "This was officially nothing more than a standard 914/6 fitted with the optional R-package;" Is this guy for real, or am I just missing something?
From everything I've seen so far there isn't one operational part of the 914/6 that was untouched to produce the GT. Other than the outer body, it almost bears no resemblance to the factory car. Not that this isn't to be expected for a full-out race car, but I guess I was hoping for something a little closer to the production side of the house verses the racing side. It's hard enough to find descent parts for the production cars. How much more difficult for a non-production racing car. I guess I'm just not ready to go into the production/fabrication business yet. One thing that I did learn was that Porsche produced the 914/6 with an M471 body & wheel package. Now this is more like what I had in mind. Brian's book is the only reference I've seen for this so far. I'll have to go out and review these GT sites again to see if any of them mention it. If others have some current data on this model, your input would go a long way to help me determine which direction to take. Another thing that has me curoius is details on how they managed to get the 220HP from the 2.0L six. Just as an aside: I recently saw an older Speedvision show that discussed the Toyota Supra Turbo in which they had a water-cooled 4cyl producing 500+ HP. Although HP's not everything, that's quite impressive. Keep you wheels on the ground. Gerard ------------------ Gerard 74-914 2.0L 3D914 rodrigos6@juno.com |

Actually, as far as 70s-vintage endurance racers go, the 914-6 GT was very close to the street car.
There is some confusion about the M471 option. I've heard a few people call it the GT option, while others (including Brett Johnson) say that it was just the fender flares with larger wheels and wheel spacers. 220 HP from a 2.0 liter Six isn't that tough to get. Twin plugs, really high compression (runs on race gas only), spins up to ~9000 RPM, and so on. Lasts about 24 hours + 5 minutes when used at "full song". And makes a really crappy motor for a street car. --DD |

Hello
The story is very simple: Porsche made some factory GT´s at Zuffenhausen. Porsche ordered other companys to make GT bodys for them ( Karmann, Bauer in Stuttgart and KW in Weinsberg ). Also some dealers get prepared bodys in different stages. ( Hahn ( was inofficial Porsche race dept. then) MAHAG, AMAG, Strähle, Max Moritz ). I think one car went to Alfa Romeo or Abarth ( Alfa general designer was a former Porsche engenieer ) and one to Volkswagen. Porsche Salzburg had also cars Some GT´s where used to make the 916´s. some cars get a chopped A pillar and where raced in the staates without wide fenders but later upgraded. The M 471 Potion package where a regular option but mostly used to build up a GT. Dealers and privatiers used that as a base car in verious stages. The race parts could be bought at Porsche over the desk. Engines where depending on the usage. Mostly the 190 HP 2,0 om regular pump gas. The 906 engine was only a option but ddin´t used regualary. Some cars get only a 160 HP stock S or even a lower powered engine. the marathon cars had only 140 HP to gain fuel economy ( Fueling up takes time ). Today new technology pumps out 220 HP on regular 98 ROZ gas. Drivability is still very poor but good made 180 HP engines will run smoth and have a normal idle. Now all those cars where used, crashed, rebuilt, sold and made there ways. One GT became the famous Menschik Speedster. Martin Sommer had one and traded it into a 916, Joseph Reip has one, Steven Perry has the ex Waldegard car and is still racing with it, Charles Guyot has one or two. One is owned by a dentist in Reutlingen. The german 914/6 club traced most cars down in the late 80´s and the storys where covered in the clubmagazine. Grüsse |

Thanks again all for your feedback. I'll keep reading and digging. Perhaps I'll find something closer to my taste.

#40 Le Mans Class Winning 914-6 GT more recent photos...
Here are more recent photos of the #40 Le Mans "Class Winning" GT...
http://www.pbase.com/9146gt/factory_9146_gt_race_cars Some of these photos I shot as recent as July 2003 when I met Mike Haggen who kindly allowed me to come and see his car. The main purpose of my visit was to make tamplates of some GT specific parts and not really for a "photo shoot"... "She wasn't ready!" ![]() Thanks Mike!!! Thanks Armando,
Those are cool pics. Now I just have to get my daily driver 914 running reliably before I can even begin to think in these directions again.

Yeah, I don't think that's going to be heading to Monterey... unless it's at the Lemons Concours.
