you got the ground wire at ground and the hot wire at hot? how about the coil. is it plugged into the right side?? if all of that is true sounds like youve got a crossed wire somewhere

Thanks for the help.
My Haynes just showed up. Show I'll start tracking them down. I'll match up the wires and the numbers and see where I'm at. then I'll get back to you.

Coil wire is correct.
The tach wires ?
Pulled out the tach.
The ground wires are on the left spade.
The Black/purple is on the middle spade.
And the red/white is on the right socket.

Is this correct ?
TIA

thats right on the tach, and im sure that the ground goes to ground on the other end and the red/white goes to a hot. make sure that purple one isnt crosed with a hot, or is grounded out. if thats not the case, i would suspect a bad tach.

Going to get out my meters.

Check the RPM @ the coil. Then at the black/purple at the tach end. If I lost the signal I'll go into the relay board connections. Haynes schematic say's the wire goes in one side and out the other.

I'll check the ground for continuity. I think it was loose when I pulled it out. I tightened it. I believe if the ground is loose you'll have no lights on the tach and gas/temp gauge. I remember one night on the way home on the trailer I turned on the lights, and only had lights on the speedometer.

I'll let you know what I find.

All connections are good and correct. Continuity and Voltage.

Have a good signal on the Black/Purple at the tach. So evidentally, tach is not working.

well i am about aout of ideas. have the tach checked, or get one of the cheap ones from pep boys, or borrow one. plug in the temp tach and check to make sure your circut board in the engine bay isnt at fault. as ive come to understand just about everything in that car goes though that board and its about 90% of all electrical problems. If its your tach i have an extra one from a 74 914 (dont matter what year though) let me know and ill check to make sure its good and ill sell it to you cheap
