914 Driveshaft removal

I need to remove the driveshaft from my 914. I took a look and its seems pretty simple, any suggestions or precautions before I attempt it? I have never done it before and just want to make sure I dont do something I shouldnt have.

You're right...pretty simple....Just be sure to clean out the bolt 12 point holes....they get very nasty and the drive will slip and mess up the hole...use new gaskets....that's it...good luck!

Completely removing the drive axle, or just disconnecting it? If you're removing, the outboard ones are a pain. You either remove the bolts holding it together, then try to wiggle/pry/anything you can to pull the joint off the stub axle, or you remove the stub axle and separate it on the bench.

Removing the stub axle means removing the axle nut, which is torqued to something like 250 lb-ft, and that's before age and rust and dirt have set in to make it harder to remove...

Oh, and if you remove the stub axles, do not roll the car around. You'll kill the wheel bearings in short order if you do that.

The engine is out of the car, so the driveshaft on both sides of course are just hanging there. If I look inside the boot there are a few hex head bolts. Now, do I remove them from there? Or do I need to disconnect something from the wheel area. Im not very experienced in this stuff so im learning as I go.

Sorry...I thought you were just taking them off at the tranny....you have to do what Dave said....the big castle nut at the end of the axel will have to be removed....soak and if you have a impact wrench use it....or get a log piece of pipe on a breaker bar....as Dave mentioned the nut is torqued to 250ftlbs
