Idle speed - hot vs. cold
My '73 1.7ltr idles about 1100 when warm and about 500(?) when cold. In the perfect world of 914's
![]() , it seems that the rpm's should be a lot closer, if not the same, when cold or hot. Can someone tell me what to look for? BTW, I just had the distributor rebuilt, so I don't thinks that's it. My mechanic put in new points and injection triggers. Also, what should the idle speed be. I think it's around 900rpm? TIA Rich '74 2.0 '73 1.7 |

Check that the Aux Air Regulator is working. If it isn't then a PO probably just bumbed up the idle to compensate for it.
The AAR is on the Dave Darling vac hose diagram on this site. It allows air to bypass the throttle body when the engine is cold and then closes itself off as the motor warms up. New ones can't be had but soaking a bad one in PB Blaster overnight can fix it. If not an AAR of a newer bus (up until 83 I beleive) looks different but works the same. This assumes you still have FI. |

The cold idle should be higher than the hot idle to help the engine warm up quickly. On our stock 914 cold idle is 1200 RPM and as the engine warms up it drops to 900 RPM. The AAR is just behind and to the left of the oil filler and is held in by two screws, same as the engine tin. There may be a power wire attached so be carefule when you pull it out. Soaking it in de-ruster and then putting 12 volts to it will tell you if it works as you can see the valve move. Good luck.
