Pennsylvania Porsche People...
Hi folks:
I'm moving to PA this summer and will be there a year for the Army's War College. I'm writing to ask you folks in PA to shoot me a PM with leads for good mechanics, shops, suppliers, salvage yards, clubs, swap meets, etc that I can take advantage of on my weekends off duty. Thanks in advance! Christopher |

I think the War College is around Carlisle. Not just Porsche, but Carlisle has lots of car stuff locally:

Yes, its Carlisle...
I'm going to have a lot of free weekends to kill, so I'm looking for any salvage yards or good parts stores. Hershey's a definite...I'm primarily curious because Hershey doesn't seem like the center of the Porsche universe and I thought there may be some underlying reason the swap meet is held there. |

The Central Pa Region started a swap meet many years ago, I believe as just a local event, and more and more vendors kept showing up, it just kept growing and has needed larger venues. I first started going about 15 years ago and it was at Ski Roundtop, (obviously a ski resort....), and after a year or two it moved to Hershey Park. Before that, it had been at three or four different sites. Quickly looking at their website, 2008 will be their 32nd annual.

The 356 holiday is going to be out there this summer too.
Check out: http://www.monteithrp.com/index.html and here: http://www.aircooledracing.com/ There are probably a lot more. The Central PA Region seems to be a really good one. You can check out their website here: http://www.cpa-pca.org/

Carlisle is the automotive mecca of PA. I have to concur with the folks above. My mechanic is Bill Boys of Possum Hollow Motorsports. He's a great guy. His shop is outside Valley Forge,in Phoenixville. A bit of a drive for you. But he's cool to talk to via phone for info. Welcome to PA.

Carlisle has Eurocar weekend, kit car weekend, vette weekend, you name it, they probably have a weekend for it. And, it is probably one of the biggest car shows you will go to on this side of the country.
As to mechanics... Just to the north of you is Air Cooled Racing. He deals mainly with race cars, but he sells parts and will talk your ear off. For the VW parts you have Bug World in York (if you can find him, he is part time now) and Bus Depot. You will likely be surrounded by more mechanics then you can shake a stick at, given Carlisle's relationship to cars. Zach (45 minutes east of the War College in Dallastown PA)

Summit Point Raceway is maybe 1 1/2 hours south of Carlisle. Lots o stuff going on at any of the 3 tracks down there, from SCCA to the various Mid-Atlantic Porsche clubs running DEs. Pocono isn't too far away either. Watkins Glen is just a few hours northwest. Lots to do in the summer.
