I'm in the process of installing a front sway bar on my 73 914. I read the PP technical article which I plan to follow closely. The article mentioned that it's a good idea to replace all the bushings. I ordered the complete set from Pelican Parts (of course) but I'm wondering how to install the cup bushings because the bar is bigger than the actual bushing. The person I talked to when I ordered the parts said that putting then in boiling water to expand them ??? Does this work ? Anyone else have some ideas on how to do this?

I had forgotten mine were hard to put on until your post.
I slit them lengthwise with a hacksaw and just slipped them over the bar. I made sure to locate the slit horizontally either to the front or rear, thinking that those positions would experience the least stress from the up/down sway bar action, but I'm not convinced that it matters. Oh yeh one more thing. GREASE THOSE PUPPIES! The PP article does not say to lube them. Mine have squeaked miserably ever since I installed them, to the point where I have to take it all apart again to lubricate the bar-to-bushing surface. Change the article to include lubing Waynester! And also mention in the clutch replacement article that the pilot bearing in the flywheel needs lube too! Don't ask. |
