I posted this link in response to RustyWa question about where to buy a digital Engine Multimeter, but I thought I would create a new post to share this with everyone else:
If you are looking for a digital dwell/RPM meter go to: www.sunpro.com select their "garage sale" link, and then go to "Test & Tune". Last year's Digital Engine Mutlimeter's for $15 (normally $80 from them and $100 if you get them from a retailer). These meters are new, but they don't offer any warranty on garage sale items, for $15 dollars can you really blame them. I bought one last year, and it has served me well. There are two tricks. One is a mirror.
The other one, the one that I use, is transferring the marks to where they can be seen. I painted the whole top of the fan blade nearest the timing mark red, and put white dots on the front part of the fan at TDC and 180 out from TDC. I also have TDC and 180 out marks on the flywheel. They're visible through the notches on the top and bottom of the tranny bellhousing. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Dave,
I concur with the external marks. When I rebuilt my 2.0 liter I check the visibility of those things while the engine was out of the car and it was still tough, so I marked the outside rim of the fan at both locations as you described. Only need a small mirror to set timing. PS: It also a good idea to mark the flywheel as well for TDC and 180 off that mark. This makes valve adjust much easier. Regards, |
