914 Oil Temp Guage Question
I'm installing a re-built 1.8l into a '72 914. I have an oil temp gauge to install as well as the stock gauge only has an oil light. It looks as though the sending unit replaces the oil drain plug. Is this correct? Does anyone recommend a good way to secure the electrical wire to keep it clean and out of the way? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the light is for oil pressure.
I think all the stock ones have a temp gauge, left side of guage cluster at top. zip tie should work to keep it out of harm's way

The temp sender does not normally screw into the oil drain plug, but maybe the kit you got is that way. There is a circular panel callled the "taco plate" on the botom, towards tthe firewall and of toward the drivers side. It has a little bump where the oil temp sender wire comes out through a hole. Behind the taco plate lives the stock temp sensor, riding in the wet sump. It should be the right size too.

The 914s with center consoles that have gauges have an oil temp gauge in the console. Supposedly all 2.0s without center consoles (and all 914-6es) had oil temp gauges in the top of the "combo gauge".
The four-cylinder oil temp sender is in the "taco plate", as mentioned. --DD

If you meant oil pressure sender, thats up top near the distributor.

sounds like you have a VDO oil temp gauge (or temp gauge for any fluid). there is a sender option for the drain plug. you can consider this option if you do not have a "taco" plate sender as mentioned above. taco senders go for around $40 and if i recall, the drain plug sender is about $12. then there's the need to have the gauge and sender matched so it reads correctly. if you have the VDO gauge and not the Porsche gauge, i'd recommend the drain plug sender since it will be matched to the gauge.
