Saga of a Canned Spray Paint Job for a DD 914

OK ...

Itsa Spray Paint Can Thing

Gonna have to wet sand and clear coat it ... but in one days work I can complete a section (panel).

Major body work (Bondo) is done. Details on the Lids and Bumpers, etc. It's like painting a model car. Prep, Detail and Patience (let the paint dry and cure).

Hope, Inspiration, and Perspiration. New wheels coming soon.

Rick

Thanks Man,

I haven't gotten that far yet. This is a single stage Alkyd/Enamel paint and it shines nicely now, but once it's cured and wet sanded ...

Any suggestions for a clear coat?

Rick

The reason I asked the question was in my mind a automotive clear might wrinkle/lift the oil based Rustoleum finish. Does Rustoleum make a clear? I believe they do. I wonder how Rustoleum clear like buffing/waxing?

Thanks,

This paint isn't an oil based paint. It's an Alkyd (which is a hybrid of sorts.) It dried way too fast to be Oil Based.

I'm sure that by the time all the experts and alchemists chime in on this thread, we'll know all the ins and out of this process. Rustoleum makes a clear coat.

BTW ... what color is your 914 project? Tell me about it.

Rick

When I sold paints ( in the 80's ) alkyd meant oil based has that changed? Anyway my project 914 is a 75 chassis. I am going to install a 1978 911 SC 3.0 with 40mm Weber carbs. I have converted all four sides of the suspension to 911 5 lug and am running 911 M calipers on all 4 corners. Elephant Racing polybronze bushings on all 4 corners. I recently installed a 19mm master cylinder with all new hardlines. Koni shocks in the rear with 140 lb. springs. Standard Boge front 911 inserts. Many chassis stiffening kits have been welded in. OEM color is L11D Berber Yellow and that's what she will be repainted. I have installed GT metal flares on all four corners. Brumos Racing headers that have been ceramic coated and M&K 2 in 2 out muffler. That pretty much wraps up what I've done to date. Hope to have her running by December.

Dude. You're over my head but I understand what you're up to ... I think. I saw your pictures of your front end and your brake cylinder ... Looked great!

I'm a simple 1.7 trying to keep it original and restore it on the cheap. (My son wants me to put a WRX in it but it doesn't fit into my plan. So we are kinda looking for a roller to HotRod.)

I'm a detail oriented person. And ...yes ... Alkyd is an oil based paint but it was marketed as a clone ... Oil properties but fast drying.

Anyway ... I'll have to research a clear coat. Again. You have any ideas?

Out!

It took 3 cans to do 1 good covering coat over grey primered bondo on the passenger side. The Drivers side has no body issues but after sanding the old paint down to primer, that should take another 3 cans.

Probably 2 cans for the read lid and probably 2-3 for the bonnet and cowl.

I bought 14 cans from the same color lot and I have 11 left.

Guys have been using Rustolum in a can with a foam roller to paint cars for several years. You could do a search here and on 914world/club site. I know it has been discussed here.

Alkyd paints are oil based. Not a clone, whatever.

The amount/type of solvents in the paint make it dry faster or slower.

For your repaint, did you take it down to metal then primer? Or, did you just sand down a bit then primer then paint. I would love to do a cheaper route to mostly fix wavy doors and a poor paint last time before paying for a quality job down the road. Please let me know what steps you went through. Thnx.

Strobe,
I'm not an expert and there are those among us who will 'poo poo' this whole concept, but the basics of a paint job are basically the same, IMHO. 45% effort in prep, 10% in applying the paint and 45% in finishing. And BTW this isn't a temporary job, this paint job is as permanent as any. (All fixes are temporary ... that's why they call them 'fixes')
I used 80 grit to cut the paint down to the primer; and to the metal if you need to get to a place where bondo needs to be applied. If you go to metal to find a starting place, I used green etching primer over the metal, then bondo, then 80 grit to shape it. Use heavy bodied sanding primer over that, then 220 to smooth it over.
The Major Commodity Cost here is T I M E ... don't paint until you are 150% sure that you are happy with the shape and feel.
I'll post more info on the finishing as I cross that bridge.
Out!

So, about how many cans of paint would be required to cover the entire car?

David,

I'm thinking about 12-14 cans will do the whole thing. The amount of sanding primer is probably about the same.

I'm spraying the rear 1/4th of the car today and I'll have more pictures to put up.

That's not so bad.

I'm priming my car one panel at a time then I'll paint it using AutoAir (same stuff I paint helmets and RC cars with. This stuff isn't as caustic since it's waterbased but does require a clear coat.

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

Here is my $101 Rustoleum paint job. All rattle canned (recently swapped the hood so haven't painted it yet). Notice the door is still flat - just swapped those out a month ago as well and will be buffing those out. Need to fix all the rock chips as well, which is why I rattle in the first place on a race car.

three coats, sand, three coats sand, 3 coats and let dry and harden a few weeks. Buff out. It is semi-gloss and I buffed it cuz I was going for a different-than-everyone-else look to the car. New scheme this summer will be Rustoleum Ultra-Flat Camouflage green on the upper half. Bought another $50 of paint to do that. So, yeah, I would agree 10-15 cans will do the whole car as I did all of what you see here with around 12 of them.

photochopped paint scheme. Flag may be hard to do since I added the louvers

TIM!!! I've been waiting to see how you implement the new scheme. You gotta post pics when you git-r-done! I still think a matte silver stripe along the seam would be cool. (Even more cool than the flag )

Dang, I wish I could get a ride in that torque monster.
