Post FYI on alternator change

I have seen the question oseted many times asking if it is possible to change the alternator without dropping the engine. The resopnce i have seen is yes, if you unbolt the support bar and drop the front of the engine down a bit. My answere to that is there is an eaisyer way !! My fan fell off and i really didnt feel like pulling the engine so i got inventive. i found out that if you unscrew that most forward piece of tin you can push it out and off though the top. after that, theres more room than you need.

on another note. i have a working tail shift tranny + linkage. I plan to sell it soon. what should i ask?

I have pulled my alternator without doing much as far as removing stuff. I think I ended up removing one of the pieces of engine shroud and unbolted the alternator and it basically fell out. I think the only other thing that got in my way was the flapper box and possibly one other thing. I removed it in 30 minutes, if that.

My tech article on alternator replacement talks about how I replaced the alternator without removing the crossbar, or heat exchangers or any of that. The left-front piece of engine tin is separate specifically for alternator access, at least as far as I can tell.

It's available in the Tech Articles section of this site. No pictures, sadly, as it was before I had gotten a digital camera--and I don't really want to do the job yet again just to take photos...

I can take a couple of pictures for the tech article, but I won't completely remove the alternator. I will be changing the oil in my car and cleaning up the underside of the engine. I have a digital camera as well. Hopefully I will remember to take pictures and I will send them to you, Dave. Although, they might not be all that much help.

I used Dave's tech article last weekend to change my alternator. Worked really well. Dave, the only thing I would add to the article is that getting the bolt back and aligned through the tin and the alternator was a real pain to line up, but inserting a small screw driver in the rear of the hole to line up the alternator and let the bolt slide easier was a real help.

Other than that, the article worked perfectly!
