An older gentleman in my area has in his possession both halves of the cylinder housing and I believe the crankcases for an engine that he was told was to a Porsche. He asked me about them, but I wondered if they did not go to an older Beetle. Hence I am approaching the experts. The markings on one of the cylinder housings were: VW S112 004 101 102A. It is definately a four cylinder. He also has a Weber carb lost in his garage. Are these worth anything or worth anything to anybody? He is wondering if there is a value and if anyone would be interested in taking them off his hands. I guess the first thing is to ID what they belong to.... Thanks,
David |

What's a "cylinder housing"? Where were these numbers found?
I would suggest that you search for serial numbers on the crankcase itself. That will tell you what the engine was originally out of. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Dave,
I am most likely referring to the part with incorrect nomenclature. The only part number I could locate was VW 004 101 102 A with an S112 above the number. I am very suspicious that someone sold/gave the gentleman a story and this is from a 72 + Beetle, not a 914. Just trying to confirm my suspisions before and help the guy out. Just stopped in to look at a '79 Vette he is selling. Jabez, Man are we out of the way for a Dallas to Houston run. Did you come down 14? Drop me line next time, at least I could see what a running P-Car looks like. Mine is down with broken head studs. David |

Well, a 914 motor would be a Type IV while a Bug would be a Type I. The Type IV heads have exhaust ports that go down toward the ground, while the Type I has ports that go fore and aft.
356 motors have similar port layout to the Type I, and in fact are fairly similar. But the "VW" on the case makes me think it's not a 356 case. A quickie Google search came up with the following list of engine codes: http://homepages.together.net/~rhill/years.htm Hopefully that will help. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Dave,
I think we have it narrowed down. This is definately for a 914. I feel it is the 1.8 or 2.0 liter with Smog Ports. The numbers on each side of the aluminum case are 004 101 101A and 004 101 102A. They match up perfectly to the drawings and your description. The serial number (found it this evening in a very obvious spot) is AW021857. The die marks appear to be 6 1 12 with circles around them. He also has the heads. They are 022 101 372. Everything has the VW stamp near the part number. The heads also have a number P310/4XX, I cannot make out the XX clearly. The gentleman also has two Weber carbs. Besides the rusting studs and bolts, this is the complete set of what he has. Is this worth anything? Would anyone be interested in talking to the man about buying them? I don't want any money, but will put yall in contact with each other. Jabez, Drop me an e-mail and I'll give you our phone number. The cattle barn has fantastic steaks! (Yes, it is in the country in Texas.) David |

According to the Type IV Secrets Revealed web site, http://www.tunacan.net/t4/reference/case.htm , the "AW" case is a 73-75 1.8L Bus engine. Low-ish compression, 65 HP, either L-jet EFI or carbs.
Worth? I dunno. The T-4 conversion folks really like the 1.8 heads, and any Type IV case can be built into anything. Might be worth $500 to the right person--at a total wild-ass guess. You can check around on that web site for more info on stuff like the heads. --DD ------------------ Pelican Parts 914 Tech Support A few pics of my car: http://www.pelicanparts.com/gallery/Dave_Darling |

Dave,
Thanks very much for your help. I'll let him know and he can go on in life. Doubt he'll be happy, but it's better to know the truth. Again, Thanks very much! David |
