rear window leak

The only time I seem to have the roof on my 914 is to wash it. The side windows seal well,(I was suprised) but I think the rear window is leaking. After washing the car, the is water on the floor board under the carpet BEHIND the seats. NO water is coming down the rear upholstery panel at all, so I suspect it comes from the bottom seal of the rear window, and flows down inside of the fire wall.

Is this possible?

Any fix for this? I was going to just pull away the black rubber an dseal it with silicone, before replacing the rubber.

Any other ideas?

This is not an uncommon place for a leak. The correct fix for it is to remove the backpad and the roll bar paadding, cut the butyl tape that holds the rear window in (the stuff at the bottom of the window will be loose), remove the window, clean everything up, and use new 1/4" butyl tape to mount the window.

The "tape" is more like a "snake" of adhesive goo that you push into the channel in the car's body and then push the window into.

I still need to do mine, but I will be working on metal repairs and cleaning up the engine compartment with the rear glass out, so I've put this off.

The leaky rear window can cause rust holes in the firewall as I found out when I removed the pad on my race car and cleaned things, there were four holes of various sizes! To get them fixed was going to cosy about $350 or so so I bought a MIG welder and did it my self. The sound deader pad will trap the water and eat right through. There are also a couple of places in the lower left engine compt that will let water in such as the e-brake tubes, etc. I removed everything and looked inside as we sprayed water at the back and found the leaks.
