How bad is this?

I have a 1974 914 that has issues with rust along the inside (Sail/targa support?) I'm not sure what it's called and I'm having a hard time finding any information on repairing it. Also is this area a major issue as far as structural support?
There are no other rust through problems along the firewall or floor, just surface rust. Wheel wells are good, front trunk is great, the rear is rusty, no holes. The car isn't sagging, the rear driver side tire seems to tilt in at the top slightly (checked out ok), and the door sills look to have been heavily bondo repaired and it hasn't been on a lift yet. So how does it sound so far? I'm in the beginning phase of restoring her so if this is a major issue I may need to rethink repairing it and look for a new one

Thats her

actually that is really bad
I'm guessing you really need to pull the rocker covers off (under the door)
they cover the longitudinals (the frame essentially)

your car may actually technically be totaled
ie: more expensive to repair than its worth.
probably best to enjoy the car the way it is

sorry about that
I've never seen a 914 rust the way yours has?

Wow! That certainly is an unusual spot for these cars to rust out. You need to evaluate the longs under the rocker panels as mentioned. I'm in Lorain, OH. If you're close to me I could help you go over the car and point out any issues.

anything can be fixed. But as Brant said there may be some worser stuff lower down on the car.

Beautifull paint can cover lots of sins.

the race car I am building has at least 50 lbs of Bondo on it. 4 layers of paint and I found evidence of 3 different cars making this one.
Lots of cutting grinding and welding sanding.

Looking at the picture of the passenger side of your car it looks like the door gap is real ctight. Maybe its just the angle of the picture, but if this really that tight at the top of the door you have some longitude rust issues also. The heavy bondo you talk about in the sills is hiding some bad stuff I would bet.

Yeah, it's an unusual spot for rust like this and it's only on one side. It's heart breaking, I had no idea it was there until I took out the interior, it was hiding behind the trim. I just can't figure out how it happened. I may be able to get the rocker panels off today to see how bad it really is. I was lucky enough to be hooked up with someone that has an awesome chassis, if everything goes well she will get a new old body and be on the road by summer.
The door gaps are fine, I put chrome strips on the door edges so it looks tight. the doors close and open perfectly, even with people in the car. The targa fits, no noises, the windows fit tight along the seal. It's kinda hard to figure out whats going on with the car until it gets thoroughly inspected. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I've got the same sail panel deteriation, mostly on the passenger side. It was totally hidden by a ruthless bondo job and I suspect that may be what you're looking at on the driver's sill. The rear wheel tilting inward at the top may just be a bad alignment or it mayt be a rusted/sagging trailing arm mount. The former fixed with a couple shims, the latter fixed with a cutout and rebuild.

If I were to bet on it, I'd bet it needs some major work. Having said that, it looks like you've got a very nice car there and worth some work. If you're up to it, I'd say go for the fix.

Given the pictures, It's not that bad. I've seen plenty of 914s rusting in the exact same area. I have one out front that has rust in the same area although not as bad. My Creamsicle was rusted really bad here. It usually starts from the plastic plug area above the door lock and continues upward and inward via that plug. Certainly fixable given your a DIY type of guy and you have access to a MIG setup or someone who does. I'd argue that in no way is the car "totaled". Be nice to get the rest of the rear section and seatbelts out for better pics.

Fixed that same area...

I had the same issue on my car. I fixed it in my build thread on another board.
Look at page 8. Not too many pictures but it might give you an idea.

You probably have lots of other rust issues, but they can all be fixed if you are
patient (and crazy helps too).
