3.0 and G50 and exhaust

At the moment we need to decide which tranny to use for our 3.0 FI conversion project. The wrecked 82 911sc came with a G50, and I also have a known sideshifter 901. I understand the G50 is a great tranny but how does it work in a 914? If the G50 is better for the 3.0 and does it fits? If so, how do we hook up the cable shifter?

Also, I am in need of heat exchangers or headers, and a muffler. does anyone have a lead for me?

The G50 will need a lot of work to fit in the 914. It's been done, i worked on one, but it took a lot of time and fabrication.

How much HP and torque do you get out of your 3.0L? I have a 3.6L with about 300HP and i run it in front of a bone stock sideshifter 901.

As long as you don't put too much torque through 1st gear, you should be fine with the 901.
I just take off in second and don't use 1st gear at all anymore. I can lay down 30 feet of rubber taking off in 2nd with the 9" GoodYear racing slicks.

So far, no problems at all.
Andy

I second the comment regarding the 901. Have one in a 914-6 with a 3.2 Great gear box, just take it easy when starting off.

BTW, the 911SC would have originally had a 915, which to me has more in common with the 901 box than with the G50. The 915 is a pretty well understood quantity in a 914; the Factory used them in the 916 prototypes, and several aftermarket solutions have been developed. Vellios made a setup that was similar to the 916 setup, a number of people have made cable shift setups, and Wevo makes a really trick nose-cone with linkage built in. You will, of course, have to have the ring and pinion flipped, which is extra work...

A good 914 gearbox can deal with a surprising amount of use and abuse. Mike Z had one in his 3.0 914-6 conversion ("The Rocket"), and I've known others with 3.0s and 3.2s who have been reasonably happy with them. As was mentioned, be careful with 1st gear.

hey, thanks for the reply, we have a known 901 in great condition. Could you help me find some 3.0 6 cylinder headers or heat exchangers?

Heat exchangers for a mid engine are pricey. The oem ones will work for a mild 3.0/3.2 with great bottom end but with a sacrifice at the top end. Headers while cheaper can be used with no heat application but can be tuned to the car by various diffeent tube sizes.

If you aren't using the G-50...I'd be interested in it. I have a 3.6 powered early 911....
