71 914/4 shifter bushings

I own a 914/4 and I need to change the shifter bushings. What is the procedure for r/r'ing these bushings. I was told by the former owner, his mechanic used rubber between the shifter rod and firewall. I want to make everything correct. I believe the shifter is original ( not upgraded to sideshift). Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

The bushing at the firewall is not rubber, it should be a hard plastic. I made a little tool to get mine in which consisted of a piece of all thread, two washers and two nuts which pressed the bushing into place....worked well for me.

In addition to everything else, pull apart the shifter (the gear selector in the passenger compartment). There are 2 bushings and a spring, not to mention the lockout plate and lockout springs. NOBODY replaces the bushing in the shifter, and they make a big difference as well.
