Indulge me in this

Ok so my 73 914 dual weber carbureted 1.7, sat for a long time before I got it ...then
New plugs, rotor, cap, wires, blue coil, fuel filter, fuel, cleaned the carbs and it started, and will idle.
But there is no power. It will barely make it down my driveway and back.
So help me out here...everyone I talk to has different ideas of what I should do first.

1. Clean the carbs ( off the car this time)
2. Rebuild the carbs.
3. Check timing.
4. Adjust the valves.
5. Check compression.
6. The gen light is on when it runs.

so what is the priority here? All the above?
Would low voltage in the charging system be a problem?
Thanks for the advice.

This can't be that complicated...

1. check timing,

2. pull 1 plug wire at a time to make sure it's idling on all 4 cyls. if not determine which cyls and why. Could be fouled plugs plugged carb jets or some combination.
I've seen 4 cyls run on opposing cyls and be surprisingly smooth but there's no power.

3. compression check. You could just listen to the engine as it turns, does it spin evenly on all cyls.

4. is there anywhere to attach a vacuum gauge?

5. Rebuild carbs.

what kind of webers are they?

low charging voltage shouldn't matter as long as the battery is good and is fully charged

did you set the point gap? Does it still have points?

Yes it has points, I did not check the gap, and the points are not new. Neither is the condensor
Thought about getting those, too. .Not sure what kind or how exactly to tell what kind the webers are. I am guessing 40mm from what I was told.

Points are critical. They greatly affect the timing, and they greatly affect the quality of the spark. Check the point gap--a business card is very close to the right gap. Then check the dwell. After it's right, then make sure the timing is good.

The carbs will have writing on the sides. The numbers should be one of the things on there.

Take the carbs apart and clean them. Thoroughly clean out all
the orifices and blow out with compressed air. The fuel has become
varnish and clogged the idle circuits.
