914 Transaxle ID

I recently acquired a 914 transaxle. It appears to be in good condition. I'm thinking about refurbishing it for a future project.

Can anyone advise what year it came from and it's aprox core value / value when rebuilt?

Here's #'s from varoius spots on the case.

914 301 302 00
914 301 101 00
914 301 311 02
914 303 127 01

Thanks

A quick look in the parts PDF only showed that one of those numbers is the side cover for all years.

Probably the easiest way to tell what it is: Does the shift linkage go into the transmission through the end cover, or does it go through the main part of the case? If the former, you have a tail-shifter (70-72), if the latter you have a side-shifter (73-76). The gears were all the same for all years, except that the 914-6es had different gearing from the four-cylinder cars.

A ZF limited slip differential was a very rare option. The Sportomatic was also an exceedingly rare option.

The value of the box depends on condition, and can range from "get it outta here" to a few hundred bucks.

There are plans for a "Dr. Evil Transmission Rebuild Clinic" in Napa for some time in December. It might be interesting to take that to the clinic and learn how to rebuild it...

914 transaxle

thank for the info Dave, the shift linkage goes in through the side, not the tail.

How would I be able to tell if if is a limited slip ZF transaxle?

Put it in gear, hold the input shaft still. (If it's hooked to the engine, that will hold it nicely.) Turn one output flange by hand. If the other one spins the opposite way, you have a conventional open diff. If it spins the same direction, you have a limited-slip.

More info, including serial number decoding, can be found at:

I might have to go to that deal, if only to meet the man. I thought he was going to be done with school and be too busy to keep doing the trannys. Suppose that is the idea of the clinic, show a bunch of people how to fix them. I have one I need to probably do, so when the one in the car goes out, I have a good one ready to go.

heh, heh, I said keep doing the trannys
