looked at a 73 914, not sure if it is good...help...
I have never owned a 914 and went to see one the other night. It is a 73 2.0. I used the buyers guide to check for rust and the only rust I could find (except minor surface rust) was some tiny pin holes to the right of the battery tray.
The floors, rockers, front and rear storage areas are solid. What I am not sure about is the mechanics of the car. I drove it and had some trouble shifting into 4 and 5th, but the owner said he would adjust the bushings. The clutch did not engage until the pedal was almost fully released. The body is scratched and there is bondo flaking of the front and rear deck lids and the entire car has been painted purple (the org. color was brown). The interior is black and taken out of another 914. The front and rear plastic bumpers have some holes in them. He is asking $2800 for the car including clean front and rear deck lids from another car, stainless exhaust (new, not installed), plus other parts and books. Is this a good price for this car? Or am I not giving enough information...help |

It depends a little on what part of the country you're in, but all in all, it doesn't sound too bad. The Bondo worries me, look for signs of and accident, for $2800 you can get hurt pretty bad. Take it to a Porsche (or a forign car shop) shop and have them look at it. Most places do it for $75-$100 that is less than 5% on the cars cost. As Wayne has said there are a lot of little things that can add up real quick like brakes, bearings/bushings, tires, and clutch. Try to look at another 914 of the same year, it will give you a better idea of what to look for. Oh, by the way I assume it is fuel injected, I personally wouldn't spend the money if it has carbs. Also unless you really trust the PO make sure it is a 2.0L all the 4 cylinder cars look alike. Look for the engine number and more importantly look for 3 intake to head studs and not 4. This means that it has the 2.0L heads at least.

Jerry, Im with Noonan. If you were spending 1500, id say go for it. But at that price, you should not be getting any surprises. The typical things as brakes, suspension are to be expected, but if you have a previously totaled or major wrecked car on your hands, you maybe in a world of hurt and expense.Ive heard that you can get a decent "california rust free" car for about 4,000 that should be in good condition. If you are from an area where salt is used on the streets in the winter, the car is probably worse than it appears. Be careful. Have someone check it out. As far as the shiftin goes, it may only be the transmission at worst
