74 914 2.0 Engine Rattling
Hey Guys,
My 74 914-4 2.0 has some loud rattling that has developed in the past few weeks. I thought it was just some loose piece of exhaust at first, but after lifting the car, everything was where it should be (for the most part). The noise is pretty loud around cylinder 2 and could very well be a valve issue. Its hard to tell though because its really loud everywhere. I haven't noticed any potential loss in power, idle is smooth and consistent, and getting up hills is as easy as ever. Figured I would try and figure it out before I took it in. Thanks for any help!

Check the alternator belt. With the engine idling, check the belt with an inspection mirror. It could be jumping around and hitting the tin. If so, the culprit isn't usually the belt --in my experience, the belt rarely goes bad. It may very well be a bad alternator, or a loose/broken mounting bracket.
