I have a partially stripped case thread. It's the thread for the lower right bell housing stud. It looks as though the first (rearward) 1/4 inch or so is partially stripped, and there's still about 3/4" of deeper thread (forward) that's still intact.
The original stud didn't do the stripping; it happened when I mounted the engine to a stand with the incorrect thread. (That was the brilliant maneuver.) If I can get the stud threaded back in, will the remaining thread be adequate? Otherwise, is it possible to rethread this part of the case & go with a larger stud? Any ideas would be appreciated! TIA

IMHO, I think 3/4" of treads should be enough to hold it in place. I assume that the other 3 studs are in good shape. If I remember correctly, it only takes 3 threads with steel to steel. Alum case is a little different though...
Just my $0.03 worth.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I believe the fire's out . . . I threaded the original stud back in & out a few times (gently!) and it seems to have revived the stripped threads. I'll have a machinist check it out once I've split the case. Mark
