914 hell hole repair
In the middle of a hell hole repair on a 72. Got started on this early summer and then got pulled away on another project so I'm a bit confused and can't remember what goes where. Here are some pics. My main question is how the longitudinal comes together in the battery tray area. I see a 2nd layer under the top of the hell hole material and I'm not quite sure why. Was this enclosed? If not was it already open? The wheel well side of the car is tough to fab since it's actually curved and hard to figure out how to get it to fit. I may just piece this in using multiple pieces.

Ken,
Here's a link to my project. I'm at the same stage of repair and have labeled some of the parts for reference. I still stuck in a relocation process, so no hell (914 type) for me. Have fun,

Thanks Gerard. Wow that's damn near the same problem on this car! Even with your pics I still can't get around that open longitudinal. Was it open? It looks open on yours too. I just see the side piece being replaced and the upper section of tray getting tacked to that and then the front piece of the firewall and that's it.

Excellent! Did you cut the wheel well piece from another car? That's the one piece that I would actually like to reproduce. I know some just sort of bend a facsimile but I'd like to keep that section stock like in appearance.

Ken,
Sorry for the late reply regarding the inner long. Like you I was surprised to see that it is not a closed cross-section. Apparently that is the way it was designed. I would guess that the outer long was the primary support member, and the inner provided the additional support needed - and therefore was left open to facilitate construction. BK911 - thanks for the detailed process. The patch panel looks similar to those I've seen for sell. Ken - that is the wheel well portion you were asking about. That is available as a reproduction piece if not from this bird site, then try Automobile Atlanta. It usually extends over to the battery tray, but could be cut down to the size you need. Another option is to find someone who's cutting up a car and happens to have that area in good condition. I'm still wrestling with my 924S - so it will be a while before I can get back to the teener. Good luck,

Thanks guys. Gerard, thanks for answering the longitudinal question. Nobody ever said anything! This was *V E R Y* helpful. I've seen it done a million times but when your actually doin it it can get a bit daunting. Anyway, found the repro piece. Seems like RD now has their ***** together now that it's been picked up by someone else. The plus is the stuff gets here fast the minuses are that it costs MUCH more than it did before. Oh well.
That piece was nice and it's what jump started my fix. I'll post some pics soon. Ken Last edited by kenrinc; 03-24-2010 at 10:12 AM.. |

Mornin'.
I may be able to help. My situation is similar. Bought a 914. had it stripped and sandblasted and primed wit epoxy. Its on a roticerie so I can easily photograph it if that is a help. Mine is so full of holes that i have determined that it is not restorable. So I am parting it out. Do you need anything. Almost every old car has rust around the battery. Your pic shows typical damage, but if that is the worst of it you are lucky. My body is complete and patchable except for the drivers door, but to bring it to rights would take I estimate maybe $40k, that I don't have. All else except soft parts are useable. Engine is good, got another 100k to go before rebuilding. G Do it yourself and you know what you've got. Still, I need to get my money back out of car if possible. Send any body that need anything for a 914 my way please. Thanks Tom Kimmel - 706 632 0453 |
