914 Muffler..

Hello all. Just bought my first 914. It's a 1974 2.0 litre LE. Love the car, hate the exhaust sound. Sounds great at idle but way too loud for me any other time. I think the muffler is a Flowmaster, it says Hushmaster or something like that on it.
I want to quiet the car somewhat and I'm wondering what you guys recommend.
I don't want a tinny, raspy sound. I prefer a quiet, low, rumble sound. Similar to stock I would guess. I've owned several old 911's, all with stock exhaust,so I know how nice they sound. What about the Bursch system from Pelican?
Thanks in advance...
Mike

The Bursch might be to "raspy" for you then. There are some banana type mufflers available for the 4 cylinder cars which are closer in sound to the stock units.

If you want stock sound you are going to need a near stock muffler. I wouldn't even know where to begin to find one.
I have had header for so long............ Tangerine header with the big muffler they sell is real nice.

Note that the stock muffler will not fit an exhaust that is significantly non-stock, and I don't know of any stock exhaust that fits a Flowmaster. (Except possibly with a collector added to the ends of the stock heat exchangers.)

Some pics of the exhaust parts between the heads and the muffler should help us figure out what you have, if you're not sure.

BTW, a four-cylinder 914 is never going to sound like a 911. If you need that sound, you need a six-cylinder motor.

Thanks for the replies...
I guess what I'm interested in is what are the nice sounding alternatives to the factory muffler. Dansk factory style are available new but they are expensive at around 500.00,and I don't know what they sound like. I have a Bursch style system on the car now,but it's too loud. It's not a Bursch,it's Bursch style,so I'd like to know what other members think of the Bursch sound.
And yes, I realize it won't sound like a 911.
Cheers,
Mike

If you have a Bursch style collector then your choices are much broader. You can stick just about any round or oval muffler can on it. If memory serves it's 2" dia. but I would measure before buying.

all my miata friends run the Hush power and it's loud.

Borla sounds nice and is very distinctive.

Pretty much anything out of JEGS or Summit will fit. just look at the construction. as in straight through or baffled or perforated tubes.

Triad makes a nice muffler for both 911 and 914. Not raspy.

For a street car with stock heat exchangers, I found that I strongly prefer the stock muffler. In fact previously when I had a stock/street 914 2.0 and early 911, I tried NUMEROUS different mufflers and ended up going back to stock on both cars!

Chris..that's the way I'm leaning as well. I don't really see the wisdom of paying 300 for a used 35 year old muffler though. So the only other option is a new Dansk. Thoughts?

Dansk makes good stuff.

I had the fortune of finding a NOS factory muffler for a great price last time I was in this situation. Of course that was around 10 years ago...

I love my dansk. It is relatively quiet but still sounds like sports car when revved. I did not like my old Bursch style muffler that came with the car when I bought it. It was little too loud and had no style to me. Maybe it was old?

BTW, do you still have a sound deadening pad and rain tray behind you? These two things make the cabin really quiet.
