I was wondering what most people did with the used case bolts and head studs?
I know that the 911 crowd has wierd head stud problems and religiously changes them when doing any head work. What about 914 head studs? Should they be reused for performance applications or tossed? Also same type of questions about the 6 case bolts. Reuse or toss out? I would imagine that ARP makes some sweet new 100,000 PSI jobbies that people would use? Thanks,

From what I've been able to gather, the stock bits are plenty good for most streetable applications. The biggest problem with the head studs isn't the strength of the studs, nor of the threads in the case, but the spacing between them.
If you go with very large pistons and cylinders and moderate- to high-compression, or serious forced induction, you may very well need to go to a six-stud setup. The fifth and sixth studs are added between the heads and cylinders only, and are center of the cylinder top-to-bottom. That helps avoid compression leaks. If you're spinning a Type IV to 7000+ RPM, you probably need all the help you can get--so megabuck studs are probably the order of the day. Otherwise, the stock ones are likely to be fine. Note that the above has been gathered through reading (mostly on the Shoptalk Type IV BBS -- http://www.shoptalkforums.com), not through direct experience. --DD
