1976 to 1974 914 Parts
Can an 1976 2.0 engine drop into a 1974? I know the bumpers are different, but are most parts interchangeble?

I dropped a 1974 2.0 liter into my 1975 chassis with no problem. But I am using *Cough*Cough* Weber carbs on that engine. There are two flavors of fuel injection that Porsche used over the years. D- and J- Jetronic if memory serves. Just make sure you don't mix and match fuel injection parts and I think you'll be okay.
Almost all other 914 4 parts are good to use despite the year. There's a number of VW parts that will also work on the 914...just not many around the engine bay. |

1.8 (available in '74) had L-jetronic injection. The 2.0 had D-Jetronic. So, if you are swapping in a like motor, you are good to go. If its a 1.8 to 2.0 swap, you will have to consider this issue.
Also consider that the '76 2.0 was the lowest hp rated of the 2.0 cars at 86hp. Some of this can be restored by swapping out the more restrictive exhaust and emissions equipment. If you are in california and need to worry about smog, iirc, you would need to bring over all '76 engine emissions equipment.

The California DMV wouldn't know a '76 engine from a hole in the ground. I put a '75 in my '74 and it ran like a bat out of hell. Pull the smog **** off and plug the air injection holes in the heads. It becomes the same engine as the '73 - '74.
