Before you invest in 4x6" speakers for the kick panel enclosures, you might want to check out these replacement speaker panels. They allow you to use a 6.5" speaker. I bought a pair and they are nice.

I used Clarion SRC5794. You have to trim the metal surround of the speaker but the holes line up with the factory mounts.

I have heard that those replacement panels are nice, too.

I purchased a pair of those new enclosures that take a 6.5" speaker...very very very well made. And they look much cleaner and modern!

Looks like the Weltmeister dead pedal from Performance/Automotion?

James, Your speaker selection for the stock panels appears to be about the best I've seen.

I'm using a Blautpunk speaker, I think it's a 4x6 or 5x7, and I had to trim the speaker to fit and it only fit 2 screws instead of 4. Real nice sound, when the 914 is not in motion.

once in motion, the dual sub-woofer takes over....

I got it from Automotion 15 years ago. I think it is Weltmeister brand and I think Pelican can get Welt stuff if you call and ask.

James Adams,

That looks like a nice set up. I might have to look into some of those kick panel when I get some money and put some Alpine Type-S's in there.

how much extra space do the 6.5" enclosures take up? I can't afford to lose any legroom (6'-4"). The car originally came with some homemade 6 x 9 enclosures and they definitely encroached on the space too much.

Crutchfield actually tells you which speakers will fit.

Hey Will,

The 6.5 replacement enclosures fit great, look great and really don't have any effect on legroom....I am 6-4 as well...no probs....the steering wheel is another matter.
Don't believe anything Crutchfield tells you about fit...they haven't a clue...it's all theoretical.

Geeze...judging by my picture...it's time for new carpets! Hard to find something that's just like original...

Mike

Oh you can order from them, I do all the time, just make sure that you get someone else's word on in a speaker will fit etc. I got some of the Infinity Kappa 4x6 plates for mine. They fit right in, don't look quite as square as James' though (had to tilt them a bit, since I didn't want to cut). Good luck, the 6.5" round ones look great, if I didn't have my 4x6's I'd go that route (BTW they are smooth finish, not that that'd matter to me).

73 914 2.0 speakers

I am searching for speakers to replace some polk audio speakers that were in the car (73 914) when I bought it. I looked for the Clarion SRC5794, but don't appear to make them anymore. I did find Clarion SRC5796, but not sure if they are same specs/ fit.
Any advice on current speakers available for 73 914 would be appreciated......The polk audios that are currently installed are model DB460 4" x 6" coaxial 40 watts RMS 120 watt peak 4 ohms. I just want to hear the music better while driving with the top off.

there is a guy at 914 world that does enclosures, consoles and various other stuff. Get the ones he makes, and put your OE ones in a box somewhere. Seem to recall he is in the Pacific NW.

I don't know the model, but the car I just bought has a set of Alpines in that new kind of enclosure. They sound great - just the stereo sucks (a Blaupunkt cheapo).
