Strange Fuel Pump Problem

I just put new stainless steel fuel lines in my 1975 914 1.8 and also replaced the fuel pump. Now I have a strange problem. The fuel pump doesn't go on when I turn the key on. I have checked the fuses and the fuel pump relay and both are good.

When I open the butterfly valve on the intake air distributor the fuel pump suddenly starts clicking. Close it and the fuel pump goes off again. Does anybody here know what's going on?

The L-jetronic pump does not run when the key is "on". It runs when the starter is cranked, and also when the flap in the air flow meter is opened.

The clicking doesn't sound right. The stock type pump should buzz or hum when it runs. Hopefully you didn't put a "Facet clacker" in; it doesn't produce anywhere near enough pressure for the fuel injection system.

OK. I'm not used to working on fuel injected cars. It's not a Facet but I did have one of those on an old MG Midget. Its a brand new Bosch. Maybe it was more of a buzz or a hum when it was making noise.

So the pump is working then? Any suggestions on how I can get the car started? It has been sitting for more than a year.

You might want to indicate what you have done so far other than the new fp. Are you getting spark at your plugs? If not, there are a number of things to check. Are you getting fuel to your injectors? Again, a number of things to check. Give the group more information and I'm sure you'll get some good suggestions.

So, is gas actually getting into the motor? You can verify that by putting the injectors into jars and cranking the starter. If you have an assistant crank the starter, you can actually look to see what the spray pattern looks like, which is also slightly helpful.

Are you getting spark? An extra plug, taped with the outer electrode grounded, and hooked up to a plug wire will show a visible spark when the starter is cranked.

How about compression?

If you have fuel, fire, and air, the engine should run. Which (if any) of those is missing?
