motor tranny swap

here is a good question

has anybody ever tried to put a 944 motor in a 914, i know about the "918" but i thought with the 4 cylinder motor it might be possible to use the tranny too

just listen before you start throwing stones ... the tranny is a transaxle and goes in the rear of the car ( sound familar)
now if you shortened the drive shaft from motor to tranny or modified the 2 to get them to mate directly to each other it might be possble to do it fairly cheap ( junk yard parts which around here is 250 for motor and 100 for tranny ) and could be a fun car for a lot less than a six conversion and still be porsche driven

now granted its not a 300 hp car but 160 to 170 ( with chip) it is more than double my stock 1.8 and no valve adjusts

okay running for the hills but give me a head start it is a 1.8

The 944 motor is long. As long as the 928 motor, which requires some relocation of body panels to fit. (Either moving the tranny and trailing arms back, or the firewall forward.)

The 944 bellhousing and transaxle are longer than the 914 tranny, even without the driveshaft. it is non-trivial to put a "zero-length driveshaft" in between the 944 bellhousing and tranny.

It's been thought of before. It hasn't been done because it isn't really worth it. For just about an identical amount of time, money, and effort, you can get the 928 engine going.

I am not sure why someone would put in a Boxter motor. IMHO, it is simpler to install a 3.2 and stay w/an air cooled motor. The HP is about the same.

Also the 3.2 with FI fits nicely into the engine compartment and the necessary sheet metal is readily available.
