Question buying a project 914?

hey all, i have recently been looking at 914's (i own a 944) but i want another project hahaha... i found one that doesn't have an engine/tranny or an interior. they guy said he might trade for a few rifles i have ( old Remington .22, and a muzzle loader and or a Mossberg 500) that is about $350-$400 in firearms... I sent an email asking about rust, etc. and haven't heard back yet. it is around 3 hours away and would cost me renting a car dolly, and gas to go get it... would this even be worth pursuing? thanks!

Ask for pictures and lot of them. Rust, as you likely know, will be the enemy here. If it is rusted to beat the band, then pass or tell him you will come haul it off for free. Good luck.

I dunno. I personally wouldn't say that without seeing pictures. If it's the one in a million vehicle that's got a rust free tub, $400 is a steal for a roller. I can spend that in 15 minutes of rust repair. Finding a running driving 914 with no rust for under $2500 these days is something I would consider a challenge. Plus, what if it's got 4 bolt 914 Fuchs on it? Those are worth $500 if they are free of curb rash. Or if it's an appearance group car with good chrome. Or... I think you get the idea. I want to know more about the car and see some pictures before I give a thumbs up or thumb down on the deal.

Core engines and gearboxes for these cars are a dime a dozen. And depending on what he wants to do with the car (for example a Suby swap with Cayman gearbox like I am pursuing) the missing parts are a non-issue...

arlight guys, thanks for the advise. i dont want anything too rusty (unless i can get it for free) but i am not scared of small and few rust holes.. i have a mig and tig welder and body work tools. it looks like there is rust, from the only picture i have of it. maybe it is a primer...look at the headlight color.

I imagine any roller or project 914 you find will be rusty.. floorpans, trunks, longitudinals, battery box.. take your pick or choose them all

Also have an idea of the type of car you want to build. Is it a street car? race car? something else?

I would also encourage, if you haven't already, find some local examples and get a drive or two. The 914 is quite different than the 944. You may love it.. or you may hate it.

I just brought a rust free West Coast shell for $600.00
Finding a car will little or no rust will be hard in the "project" price range.

What I did was brought the best car I could for the $$ I had....which was $3500.00 and I got a rust cover up running and driving 73 914. It has a nice 2.0(euro pistons and cam) with 44mm IDF's electronic dizzy. It had the 5 lug conversion with Fuchs deep sixes and SC struts. I got a lot of cool parts but my body was toast. It was full of fiberglass and rust here and there front to back. So what I really brought was my "parts car" and then I found a nice rust free shell to build a much nicer 914.

Buy the most car you can....but projects are just that and Porsche stuff is $$. Remember it all adds up fast. Next thing you know you have enough in that you could have brought a nice driver

This is what I got delivered for $3500.00

Unless the car is untypically rust-free, it's not a $400 car w/o a drivetrain. Depending on the completeness and condition of the rest of the car I'd offer a couple hundred bucks for it and part it out and invest the proceeds into something workable.
