I have achieved (but not "Archived" ;)) 120MPH.

76 with stck FI 2.0 with Bursch exhaust.

95mph is the fastest I got on the public roads.
2.0 stock d-jet w/oem dansk muffler.
bw :)

The race car I used to own with a hot rodded six could get to 136mph with my foot to the floor at the CA Speedway and go right around those NASCAR turns 1 and 2 scaring the hell out me! The I was passed by an ex European series Porsche Cup car doing 168mph and thought my engine had died! His foot was on the floor too!

Joe Ricard 12-06-2010 05:11 AM

128 MPH in a 2.1L four banger. Going down the straight away @ NPR.

SirAndy 12-06-2010 11:37 AM

~130mph, going uphill from Reno to Tahoe on Hwy 80, car fully loaded with luggage (return trip from Moab, UT), two people in the car, hitting the rev-limiter in 5th ...

That's about the max. you can get with the stock gearing of the 901 ... SmileWavy

LittleBlue914 12-06-2010 09:39 PM

90 is about where i draw the line on my car. i think it has a little left but i don't attend any races or know of any good roads here in Ohio to even try

73' with stock 1.7 fresh overhaul with stock FI (thinking of swapping FI for a set of Webbers )

Like.

I topped out a 2.0 on a long freeway stretch at 120. I'm sure the lowered ride height and front air dam helped. Didn't have power for more.

Andy's 3.6 has power to push the car past the aerodynamics-efficient zone.

So many variables... Curious if you have more thought behind what you ask?

ericlees 12-06-2010 10:52 PM

thanks, well i just watched a replay of top gear's show (UK) when they're challenged to tune a Renault and make it as fast as a evo x, and they added a a few components but never achieved the performance of an evo, but they could make the car faster by just adding a body kit in the front bumper....as they did in another episode when they made a 330d a race car.

so i just asked to see the overall performance of the car before i rebuilt mine...

my '70 had a 120mph speedo.. and with the 2.1/ 4 (120 hp) I could see an indicated 115-118 at a few tracks. I'm sure that speed was 10% high due to tire/gearing changes from stock though. iirc, the stock 1.7 for my car was rated at 109mph top speed.

That's the key but you actually don't need anything close to the HP i have. The limiting factor for top speed is the gearing in your transmission.

Even with 1000HP, you still couldn't go any faster than ~130mph if you ran the stock gearing.

A warmed over 2056 with ~120HP will already get you there.

Of course, with 300flbs of torque, i get to the 130mph faster than one would with a 2056 :D

If increasing your top speed is really your goal, you need to think about re-gearing your transmission to go with the torque band of your engine ...

The rev-limiter on my 3.6L is set at 6800. I believe the tallest 5th for the 901 is a ZD which would get me close to 170mph. If i upped the rev-limiter to 8000 rpm, i could get over 190mph with a ZD 5th ...

ericlees 12-07-2010 10:31 AM

wow great, how can i work around the gearing in my transmission? is the stock for the 72 model. or do i need to replace it?

Matt Monson 12-07-2010 01:10 PM

The ways to raise your top speed are to raise your redline or to increase your tire size.

Beyond that, there are 2 other "5th" gears that are taller than ZD. I put 5th in quotes because they are really flipped 3rd gears, H and HB from a 901 4spd. A flipped H will get you up over 150mph. The v8 guys who don't usually have the option to rev but have power run that gear in 5th on their swaps.

ericlees 12-07-2010 03:38 PM

so if i increase my tires size is faster? mine is 195/65r15 91v as recommended in the porsche classic website, which size would you recommend me?

You will lose acceleration but gain top speed.
The taller your tires, the faster your top speed but the slower you'll get there ...

Nothing is for free, there's always a trade off :D

I believe Black Forest in San Diego still has the for sale card for a 914 that raced at Bonneville a couple years ago. It had a transmission from a 930 and the R&P was a bit taller so the driver actually shifted into 4th (4 speed remember) at 185MPH so most anything is possible. He tried for several years to get over 200 but kept spinning at 186 or so when the NOS was cut in for the 550 cu inch Chevy engine. He was not allowed to run a wing as it was the "stock bodied" class and no wings or non factory spoilers were allowed. The engine was sold but it is ready.......

Matt Monson 12-08-2010 07:43 AM

Man. That guy must need a passenger seat in that car so he has somewhere to put his huge cajones!!! I can't imagine driving a 914 those kinds of speeds without some sort of downforce on the car. That must be one scary ride.

John Rogers 12-08-2010 08:48 AM

When my race car went to the VW museum in Puerto Rico I bought the trailer the guy was using to haul it to Bonneville. He said that right after shifting to 4th and the NOS cut in he could feel the back end start to wiggle and it could not be stopped. I looked at the car and asked him why he had no wing, etc and he said they were not allowed. I noted the targa top was bolted down as mine was (rule requirement) and suggested he could have raised the rear about an inch so the air getting inside could exit and break that notorious vacuum behind the rear glass? He noted that no one ever mentioned that and I said that would have stopped the rear lift problem, but now it is too late.

I agree. My car gets noticeably "light" in the rear at about 125mph. Can't imagine what it would feel like at 180mph without some additional downforce and restricting airflow under the car ...
