Does anybody know of an after market CARB certified fuel injection system for the 914?

No such thing. The absolute closest you could come is a Haltech Sprint stuffed into the factory ECU box. It would take some tuning but you could get it to pass smog and preform better. Just don't disclose the Mod. The whole thing would look stock. You would need to add an O2 sensor on the exhaust.
Otherwise, you could do a subie conversion (or any newer engine). Keep all factory stock EFI stuff and smog parts. Take it to a referee station and have a California DMV blessed system. California smog law allows you to install a newer model year engine into most cars as long as ALL smog equipment it swapped over too. You may not install an engine older than your car.

Thanks for the info. I don't think commie cali will keep the exemption smog laws on the books forever for my '72. I am looking for legal options and want to keep the t4 engine.

When I went through the diesel fiasco of a smog check last year I asked the San Diego are CARB manager about the exemption clause and he said at present there no plans for it to be repealed. That surprised me since they had just started smog checking small size diesel trucks and I figured that the cut off would be eliminated?

I believe the exemption from testing (not from meeting the requirements, including having the original equipment, just exemption from testing!!) is a matter of law. The state legislature would have to basically pass another law removing the exemption, which has proven to be difficult in the past. I think us Old Sports and Collector Car Guys seem to have actual clout...
Sad to say, the only CARB-legal injection setup for the original Type IV engine is the original fuel injection system. We could put a nice modern FI on there that helps the engine run 10 times as clean as the original did, and we would be tagged as GROSS POLLUTERs because we "tampered" with the emissions system. Sigh!! --DD

I'm keeping the original engine in case the law is repealed. I am building another engine for my 914 but with upgrades. That's for another post. Thanks for the input.
