Which webers for what level of performance?

I just bought a 1.8L engine with weber 40s. According to a couple of catalogs I have lying around, the 34 webers are for stock 1.7/1.8ls, the 40 is for a 1.7/1.8 with a bursch exhaust and the 44s are for 2.0s. If I'm considering building a 1.7 with the bore and stroke (hopefully I'm using the right terms) with 1.8 heads with 2.0 valves, are the 40s that I have enough or will I need some larger carbs?

I prefer my 2.4L 4-cyl 914 engine with 40s to my 2.0L 4-cyl 914 engine with 44s. The 44s act like too much carb.

I like my weber 40s just fine on my 2.0

How do you like your 2.4? I am trying to decide on future mods...6 or 4 cyl. The 2.4 sounds good, and takes only a little work to do.

What do people think about the CB Performance carb replacement FI? Is this worth it? They come in 40 and 48 size. I was thinking this for a 2.4 4 cyl upgrade might be just the ticket for performance/cost consideration

I like the 2.4 fine-its a PO addition. A few years ago I was coming back from the beach and broke a valve, ended up overhauling. The parts arent bad to get. I run 103mm pistons and big valves (cant remember but recall 45mm and 38 mm) And it does haul ass-I can beat most vehicles off the line...its sweet.

spend $12 & get the Dellorto book at any VW shop; it has all the graphs & calcs you need to make a decision

fwiw: 40's are plenty big for ANY 914 motor. MORE is a recipe for bad gas mileage & crumby street driving, BUT they make BIG NOISE and some of your girlfriends might like noise instead of performance

I only use Weber 40's on my engines to 2056cc., even then I swap the 28 vents for 32s.

A Dellorto 40 will feed up to 2200cc, however..They flow a bit more(54cfm with stock vents)_

Anything over 2200 gets 44s, or 45 dells....the heavy breathers get a pair of 48 Dells, 10:1+ CR and big valves.
