to 2 or not to 2

I have a 72 with stock 1.7 with 80K, stock d-jet FI, running great and leaking no oil. Starts eveytime and seems to be real stable. But is the grass greaner on the other side? seroiusly concidering an engine upgrade. after talking with a few guys how seem to know stuff the best recommendation im getting is as follows. Keep my 1.7 case, change to 1.8 heads, change to 2.0 Euro pistons and cylinders, rods and crank. Keep current d-jets stainless exhangers and muffler and engine tin. Reseat valves, and have somthing done to my current cam shaft. Does all this stuff fit together oK? What else do i need? And for the biggest question of all WHAT DIFFERENCE WILL IT MAKE???????????

It sounds good except I would use a new web-cam and lifters, the stock cams tend to wear out. I use carbs because I do not want to learn about FI, but FI probobly is better. Your stock engine is about 85 HP new one would be about 105 HP. Good luck! Duane

P.S. As cheap as used engines are I'd find a donor engine to build so I could continue to ride until the day of the swap. Just a thought.

Go up to the 2.0 valve sizes if you can afford it. A good lumpy cam, some nice high compression (9:1 or maybe more for a really aggressive cam!) and you'll walk away from the stock 2.0s once you get the carbs and ignition dialed in.

Speaking of ignition, don't bother with 009s. Try the "050" or the stock 1.8 distributor. Or, if you can afford it, try getting the Mallory adjustable one! That is very cool, and supposedly makes a difference.

Dizzy

The 050 Dizzy is only perfered with carbs? Or will it make a difference with the D-Jet?

Thanks
Kerry

It'll make a bit of a difference... The EFI won't work at all. The stock distributor has the "extra" trigger points in the bottom that run the FI. The 050 doesn't.

I agree, get a core motor and keep driving the 1.7 while your building the beast

The 2.0L has a larger throttle body and different MPS, as well as bigger injectors.

I agree, buy a basket case motor to be built up with a hot bumpstick and carbs, drive the 1.7L in the mean time.

Also update to a side shift tranny.
