The only stainless 914-6 exchangers I know about are the B&B ones, and they fit rather poorly. You can make them work if you're willing to tweak them, but even at that point the muffler won't usually be flat and even.

If you need heat, the stock exchangers are the only decent option. You might be able to fabricate up some "wrapping" around a set of headers to provide some very minimal heat as well, but that's going to be a one-off sort of deal.

I do not have an email from them. I know several people who have tried their 914-6 heat exchangers, and were not at all happy with the fit. At least two of them said that B&B was not interested in trying to fix anything, either. So after a lot of work, they wound up with exchangers that fit and did not leak, but were still not right.

One more option is the install of a gasoline heater in the front trunk. 'Was a factory option I believe.
Many heaters for sale on The Samba website. (most are for VW, so brackets and ducts may be different, wide selection of condition, brands, and styles US or German made. 6 volt, 12 volt from 1960's to the 1980's manufacture (used up to the end of the aircooled vanagons)

These can be extremely effective in heating the 914, pumps out lots of heat, and has its own powerful blower. These can be grafted into the stock heater vents. Generally the gasoline heater has no oilly motor odor(that classic VW Bug heater smell). Most stock heaters begin to smell like the engine bay over time as motor oil drips/spills soak into the heater exchanger. This cant happen on a gasoline heater in the trunk.

While I have seen a few parts for the 914 gas heater, I still have not seen a complete setup. Most likely you would wind up getting ahold of one from a Bug and adapting it into the 914. I have heard a number of people talk about such a project, but again I have yet to see one completed.

The good news, as far as heat goes, is that the 914 cabin is so small that it doesn't take a ton of warm air to warm it up nicely.

I also figured that a gas heater would be a great way to go, but other than the one picture that shows a Webasto heater in the front trunk, I've never seen any other information on this setup.

I have an Eberspacher BN4 heater that I wanted to install, but haven't figured out the best location or way to install it.

It would be great if anyone has seen one in person or has any other information on this, it would be great to share and. Post it.

iamchappy: Those are very cool heat exchangers, and probably work better than the B&B

The only thing i dont like is the difficulty you might encounter in getting to all the exhaust manifold nuts...

Good point, wonder if they would do the holes like on the factory pieces.

looks like the head pipes sit up pretty high and the heater box is thin enough so you may be able to get to the nuts with out too much trouble

Wow, that's good looking, maybe I should keep my heater parts just in case I somehow get enough money to afford a set in the future!

All that work of polishing and then they run oil lines down the center of the car.

Man those are beautiful heat exchangers and I like that they are SS. I think I would have them jet-hot coated though instead of polished. I don't know what those would cost delivered here to CA but definitely the best looking alternative to the stock heat exchangers I have seen so far.

H & S ~$2500 +/-. They will make them in a size to fit a 3.2 and weld on an O2 bung.
The standard brushed finish looks great. haywardandscott dot com
