New to this forum
Hello all, I'm new to this forum, but a long time lurker in the 944 area.
Anyways, I have a 76 2.0, all original. Since I am in the military, I have kept the car stored at my parents house for the last 10 years. (My dad takes it out for a drive a few times a month). Fortunately, the car doesn't have any rust - the PO was original owner and never drove it. (57K+ miles on the car) Since I am getting out of the military, and I am staying here in FL (about 2 miles from the atlantic), I was wondering if I should bite the bullet and have the car professionally undercoated/rustproofed? Will this trash the value of the car? Thanks AFJuvat |

Welcome aboard. Regarding the undercoat, I'd do it, no questions asked, if you have a competent shop in mind. My guess would be that it would only increase the value of the car. I'd do it to my own car 'cept I need to remove a little rust first . . .

Send me an email it would be great not to be the only lunatic in this town. On second thought...yours looks to be in much better shape than mine, not sure if I want to park next to you

Personally, I would not 'rust proof' the car.
The best defense is to keep the car dry (garaged and nice day driving) and replace the battery with a dry cell (Optima) type battery. Oh, and welcome to the BBS.

If you are planning to use this as a daily or moderate driver that will see rain/snow I would undercoate.
It if its is only going to be used a "sunny day driver" I would say keep it dry but no undercoating. I think all in all it probably may hurt the value of the car if you plan on keeping it original and a low miler if not might help resale. also welcome to the board, Kelly |

Hey, nice to see another viera resident!
Nope, I don't have it down here yet. It is still up in Tennessee - I'm keeping it there until I get out of the military. (I've seen the dark grey one too) Right now, I just have my 944 daily driver. The reason I am asking is because the car was originally undercoated back when it was bought (I'm originally from Michigan - salt on the roads and all that) Since I am a couple of miles fromthe ocean and all that salt in the air, I was considering having it redone with a wax (interior parts) and a tar based undercoating for the bottom of the car. The only down side to this is that it does involve drilling into the car in places (inside the door jambs, longitudinals, etc.) thanks for the input all. My 74 914 has been undercoated, including the wheel wells, either by the dealership (it was an option on the 914/6 too) or soon after purchase, by the OO (original owner).
I've prodded around quite a bit, and have found no rust concealed. I would definitely have it undercoated, it keeps the car quieter too. |
