Most of the people I know with 914s, including ours do have the kit installed. It tends to magnify any shifting problems and with a tail shifter, you need accuracy not a short throw. I did install some of the heavier shifter springs so you won't catch reverse when shifting 1st to 2nd and installed all new bushings and it shifts well.

I have installed a short shift kit and the stronger springs on a tail shifter/1.7, side shifter/2.0 and a 914/6 with side shifter/3.0. I have been satisfied in each application. All the transaxles have been in good to execellent condition so I have not experienced any "magnification of problems".

I have noticed that I have to apply a little more pressure to move through the gears, but that is attributted to the shorter throw (Archimedes lever?). Back in High School I had a California style 57 bug, that had a SCAT short shift. That piece of crap ruined my trans axle by nicking reverse when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Of course SCAT said that it was installed wrong.

In any case, when you modify something always expect an unmodified associated part or system to be affected (effected?) if left asis.
