SF Bay Area breakfast, 4/30, Fremont

Once again, it's time for a 914 breakfast! We will gather on Saturday, April 30th at 9:14 AM at the Original Pancake House in Fremont CA. (Click here for map!)

The activities will commence with standing around in the parking lot, looking at whatever cars people have brought (and marveling at 914s that have managed to come off their jack stands!). After we get tired of that, we shall retire to the OPH and consume coffee, pancakes, and other breakfasty goodness. All will required to BS about their cars, or anything else that strikes their imagination.

Everyone interested in 914s is welcome. Even those who drive 911s. (But anyone who brings a tail-dragger should be prepared for jokes about "parts donors".)

New guy here

Long time lurker here. Recently bought a '74 1.8L in need of some serious TLC. Advertised as rust-free, with a professionally repaired battery tray and hell-hole, but alas, it has serious rear floor pan rust which needs extensive repair.

I'd love to attend the Fremont gathering and meet a few local 914 enthusiasts. I hope there's a good turn-out.

With the cross posting on 914world there should be a good turn out. My car is not running yet so I'll be driving the DD but I will have a 914 on my shirt.

Hi Dave,

My name is Hisashi. Glad to know you organize the breakfast gathering. I'm relatively new to both 914 and the bay area. It's been troublesome but should be running okay on 30th.

One of my long time concerns is that when I cold start my 914, pistons often locks (probably at dead centers?) and the starter cannot turn further. I need to play with the throttle for a while to make the pistons move again, then the engine starts. Does anyone know why this happens and a way to avoid it?

Could be hydro-lock. When way way way way too much fuel winds up in the cylinder, there isn't room enough for the piston to move up all the way. (Fuel does not compress much, unlike air.) That happened to me when the FI "brain" was completely messed up--it was telling the injectors to open but never telling them to close!

You could also have something hitting something else inside the motor. I would think that you'd hear a gaddawful racket if that were the case, though. And that it would consistently happen when the engine is warm.

Thanks for the comment Dave. I guess those are unlikely in my case. I was at HPH yesterday and he was guessing it was just a wimp starter. h.
