914 '75
Can I convert '75 914 bumpers back to earlier "70 - '74 bumpers without and modifications? I know '75 - '76 had a extra lip on body for bumpercover to attach itself to.

Yes you can backdate no you can't do it without mods. The body has " lips " on the sides and top in the front that you have to eliminate. Once gone you drill 4 holes in the body and you can mount the new bumpers.

Personally, this is the single biggest improvement you could make to the big-bumper cars in my opinion. I just have never liked the big bumpers. I know a lot of you are fans though and I am sorry if I offended you.
I would not hesitate to back-date the bumpers. What is the total weight savings?

Thanks for the info, so the lips have to be removed? How is this done? Also I am thinking of converting wheels back to Mahles and painting in Can-Am colors. Car is not original color anyway (original copper metallic). Any opinions?

To remove the lips, you either drill out the spot welds that hold them on, or you grind them off. Paint any exposed metal, or you're inviting rust to the party.
I like the copper metallic color, myself. --DD
