Spun Bearing
Lack of Oil pressure
If it is a 2.0 a dropped valve seat can seize your engine

Did you try to turn the engine by hand ?

Another one--hydro lock. If you sucked up a bunch of water into the intake for the carbs or FI, or if your carbs/FI dumped tons too much fuel in, you could have hydro locked it. Liquids are not very compressible, and when you get more liquid in the cylinder than the volume of the cylinder at TDC, the engine simply won't turn any farther.

You can remove the spark plugs and crank the motor to get fuel/water out, but it will spray all over the place. You can also evidently put the car in gear and roll it backwards to force the fuel back up into the intake.

I sure Dave meant to add that if you think you have fuel in your cyls and take the spark plug out, make sure your coil wire is out of the dist cap. Or if your have electronic ignition, the positive wire to the coil is off and wrapped. The safer way is to roll the car with the key off and battery disconnceted if still in engine compartment. You were gonna say that, huh, Dave.

Actually, I was assuming it. Bad idea, I know. My only excuse was that was during a break in my classwork today, and I was in a hurry.

You may be able to grab the edge of the fan (where the alternator belt rides) and move it that way. Won't work if the spark plugs are installed.

My usual method is to put the car in 5th gear, raise 1 rear wheel off the ground, and turn that wheel.
