Unhappy 914 Turn Signal/ Flasher Woes

The four way flashers on my 70 914 work but in a very short time the relay gets very hot and starts to melt. The turn signals do not work. I have replaced the relay with a Pelican Parts piece with the same result. Would appreciate some advice.

Without asking a bunch more questions, I'm gonna assume there is some sot of a short or ? What I would do is isolate each wire that goes to each corner of the car for its 4-ways and test as seperate circuits. You will need a DVOM( craftsman have them for as low as $20-30 ). Utilize the ammeter part of the DVOM and see what the current "pull" is on each of your 4 new seperate circuits. A single turn signal bulb is, I believe, 21 watts. Using ohms law we see that it takes less than 2 amps to light a 21 watt bulb in a 12 volt circuit. I have even seen guys make test leads with a fuse holder or a resettable circuit breaker to test individual circuits for shorts to ground.
Hope this helps, Bill

Oh and finally, welcome to the site.
