Just bought a 914

Hi everyone,

I just bought a 1971 914.
It has a freshly rebuilt 1.7 and dellortos that needs to be installed. It has a bursch muffler and stock HE's
The car was originally tangerine but had a pretty nice coat of ruby red put on at sometime. Since then it appears that macco has added to the beauty with a coat of black that hasn't aged well. It has some nice Fuchs 4 lug wheels on it.

It has a roll bar and 4 point harnesses. The rear shocks are red and appear to be pretty new along with the springs.

I'm excited to start putting it back together.

Congratulations and welcome. If I understand your post correctly the engine is not in the car yet ? If that is true I would take the time to study the chassis very well looking for ANY rust that may exist. Much easier to make repairs with the engine out. If you are not familiar with these cars they are very prone to rust and specific areas like under the battery ( infamous hell hole ) should be inspected. Don't just look with your eyes but take a ice pick or awl or screwdriver and firmly poke around. If the chassis is sound and that's a big if then I would recommend you replace any suspension bushings you think should be replaced. If your still on OEM bushings they are VERY old and may or may not be shot. Also make sure all brakes are working properly. I'm a real believer in making sure the foundation ( chassis ) is sound before installing the engine/transmission. It's so easy to get caught up in the emotion of the engine that you forget about the chassis. Just my 2 cents good luck with your project.

It's just a stock 1.7 rebuild
New bearings, rings, head job, seals, ect.

The PO had two 1.7 motors and used the best parts from both and then did the usual replacement of wear items.

Id try to find out what kind of cam was used in the rebuild. If stock, you'll have a bit of work to do to get delortos to work properly. I'm not even sure if you can still get different jets for those carbs.

It turns out I got a complete D-jetronic setup with the car. I think that is the way I'm going to go.

Probably the best course of action. While you have it off the car, you can clean and test everything. Keep in mind that the Manifold Pressure Sensor is the most important part of the setup.

After that, you need to make sure that the system is completely sealed. No vacuum leaks at all. Once you understand how the system works, it's not that complicated. Don't forget the phenolic spacers that go under the intake manifolds too.

Even if the MPS is bad, it's still worth it to track down a good used one for the driveability of the fuel injection.

Have a look at this here for some really good info on D-jet.
