1. It's a Group 42 size battery; I've been running a Champion Intl. (white case), and a friend uses a DieHard WeatherHandler, with no problems. Don't "over-battery" your 914, as the standard alternator just can't handle/charge high-capacity batteries.
2. The "euro" pistons are a good start, and the rest depends on the depth of your wallet. Electrical wise, a good breakerless ignition upgrade wouldn't hurt.

That's the size group for the battery. I installed an Optima in mine, and won't use anything else now. I like the idea of not dumping acid down onto the suspension console, somehow...
The only difference between the "go" in the US and European 2.0s was the compression. The rest of the engine is the same. --DD

CHAZZ,
A shop I have used in the Chicago area is in Bensenville called Midwest Eurosport. It is on Irving Park road just west of York road. I have only had minor work done there, but have been happy with their service. It's worth the trip there just to see their shop. It's rare to find another 914 in the Chicago area - let me know if you would like to get together sometime. I live in Elgin.

Chicago Area
I too have heard good things about Midwest Eurosport.
If there is any way you can make the trip down to East Peoria, however, 914 mechanics just don't get any better than Brad Mayeur. Thirty years working on 914s, and he is as knowledgeable, efficient and honest as they come. I drive from north of Chicago to have him work on my cars. He can be reached at 309-694-1797. No affilaition, yadda yadda. Keith, Chazz, and anybody else around Chicago: I am 914-less at the moment, but am buying another one shortly. I would love to get together with other 914 owners in the area and would be happy to take charge of organizing something. Anybody interested please email me at rdvnac@aol.com. I'll keep your contact info on hand and start planning something for when the weather gets a bit better.

A 914 reunion in the Chicago area? Hey, I'm there. Heck, I thought I was the only one in town with a 914. Anyway, my 914 is down by Champaign, IL in storage (a friends paved floor barn actually - Hey, it's really cheap storage). I'm going to take the teener out in early April, so please keep me in mind. You can reach me at omar.villa@mail.bcop.com or leave a message at (630) 773-5425. Thanks
P.S. Brian and George (the two brothers that own Midwest Eurosport) are great but typically really busy with race cars during the summer. Get in early if you plan on taking your car there. I also go to Barrington Motor Werks in Barrington, IL. They are an official Porsche dealership and they have a mechanic there named Gene Derbick that's been working on 914's for 15+ years. It's a little pricey but they can take you in about a days notice. Read the pelican parts forum though so you can do some of the work yourself. |

Keith V, didn't I meet you a few years ago? You drive a white 914 and you also own an old bug? Your name seems very familiar.
